The first cold snap always arrives before anyone's ready. Run this checklist in September or October and your furnace will return the favor all winter.
Do it yourself — 15 minutes
- Swap in a fresh filter — mark the date on the frame
- Test-fire the furnace on a mild day; a brief dusty smell is normal, anything persistent is not
- Replace smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries
- Clear furniture, rugs and curtains away from vents and returns
- Set your heating schedule on the thermostat before you need it

- Any carbon monoxide alarm — leave the house and call
- A gas smell — leave first, then call the utility and us
- A yellow or flickering burner flame instead of steady blue
- Short cycling, or the furnace running constantly without warming the house
- Banging, booming or scraping sounds at startup
